What does self-care mean to you?

Nursing school teaches many skills on how nurses are to take care of their patients but they leave out a critical skill... taking care of themselves. As a student or new grad, ask yourself what self-care means to you?

5 Elements of Self-Care

Social

Don’t just try to distract yourself from the academic and clinical stressors, instead try facing the root to the stress. Talk it out with friends, family, classmates, and ask your instructors questions.  It's easy to get caught up in studying and clinical but don't forget to have fun and socialize outside of class or clinical.

  • Texting a group chat after clinicals
  • Keep a journal for reflection; just debrief your day (Tip: write down ANY questions you had that day)
  • Find a hobby, take breaks, even go on a walk. This can help break up the long hours of studying

Physical

10,000 steps at clinical does not count as exercise, it just means you were busy. If you can add a brisk walk or do any kind of physical activity that brings you joy your body and mind will thank you.

  • plan workouts like their appointments so you are less likely to skip out
  • play a sport
  • go for a hike when its nice out

Spiritual

Whether you identify with a religion or not it makes a significant difference.

  • try some meditation and mindfulness
  • analyze nature and sit with it
  • speak to a chaplain
  • volunteer somewhere that fills your cup.

Emotional

Nursing is a profession that hardens you, it will build up walls in order to not let your emotions get the best of you. You will feel proud moments where it makes it all worth it and you will defeat when conditions deteriorate - praise your peers and yourself, you're doing great!

Things To Try:

  • Practicing self-talk, rather than saying “i’m going to fail” tell yourself that you are going to do the best you can, and will ask questions when facing challenges.
  • One at a time. Pick one task and complete it, when it’s done pick the next task. It’s important not to overload yourself.
  • Have a journal to talk about how things made you feel. Remind yourself the things that you can and can't control.

Mental

Nursing is a field where you never stop learning. There will always be new evidence of best practice and there will always be another certificate to achieve. Open up your mind to fresh new opportunities and always learn, your brain will love it. On your downtime, stimulate your brain.

  • do a puzzle
  • reading or listen to an audio book
  • listen to your favourite podcast
  • Speak with a therapist to help you navigate the stress
